Re: The Dead Night

Post by TheFly on Thu Jun 19, 2008 3:56 pm

Nice, I like this idea of sharing creative writing. I have a blog that is devoted to just that. I feel like sharing one here. Here's the link to the blog: http://placeboeffect23.blogspot.com/

"The Dead Night"
There I sit in the quiet darkness of it all wondering how it came to this; hearing the tiny chirps of the crickets outside the window seal and the soft midnight breeze brush against the leaves. Nothing is left but the calmness of the night; the dead calm of it all. The night sky sitting above watching, with thousands of eyes, the things we do to satisfy that moment of urge. There I sit in silent darkness with my witness above and my eyes below; there I sit to wonder how it came to this. I sit with my head hung low inside my chair whose squeaks are the only other noise to slice the dead silence of this night. I rock my chair this night like never before and for the first time, I can hear the silence of black, the calmness of night; I can feel the cold chill of darkness. Drip dripping the cold blood on my hands; trickling to the floor staining a deep red. Drip dripping the cold blood not of my own. Drip dripping this silence of night off my hands. I stare with my head hung low by the window seal at the dead calm of it all. I sit in darkness wondering how it came to this but realize the silence of my answer. Nothing is left but the calmness of this night.

Thanks R.G. I do a lot of creative writing. This one was actually a finalist in a competition I entered. Just thought the BadAss community would like to read it.

TheFly, I just had the chance to read your blog. I'm pretty impressed. I see you like WCW, and the Beats (Bukowski). Who else have you read? Have you read any ntzoke shange, the l=a=n=g=u=a=g=e poets, the nuyorican poets (victor hernandez cruz etc), chinua achebe? These are my favorites. Oh, Sharon Olds she has to be my all time favorite, and sometimes Mary Oliver... Have you explored anything in your writing that dealt directly with language itself? The politics of language? James Joyce definitely explored this with his Finnegan's Wake. (RG your fellow Irishman!). I'm so interested of any others you've read, especially contemporary living writers...

The Issues
(Rhodesia, 1978)

Just don't tell me about the issues.
I can see the pale spider-belly head of the
newborn who lies on the lawn, the web of
veins at the surface of her scalp, her skin
grey and gleaming, the clean line of the
bayonet down the center of her chest.
I see her mother's face, beaten and
beaten into the shape of a plant,
a cactus with grey spines and broad
dark maroon blooms.
I see her arm stretched out across her baby,
wrist resting, heavily, still, across the
tiny ribs.
...............Don't speak to me about
politics. I've got eyes, man.

Here's a poem by Sharon Olds, It's okay to post it here, yes? I'm just worried about copywrite stuff.

By Roque Dalton.

Another favorite, entitled "Like You". Let me know if you want an English translation... TheFly, I'm sure you read this poem... "I believe the world is beautiful/and that poetry, like bread, is for everyone."

In other countries where they dont enjoy the freedoms as we do, the dictators and goverments to squash opposition, always kill off the poets and writers first.

Who's going to buy me coffee damit!?! I'm getting annoyed!!!

Re: The Dead Night

Did I inspire you knowsbick? Yes I have read Sharon Olds, I rather like "His Stillness" and I haven't read "Como Tu" translated to "Like You" by Roque Dalton but I dont need a translation. I speak, write and read spanish, its an awesome piece of work. I really like it.

Your enthusiasm inspires me to write, interest in my writing always sparks something up in my head and I love to write. Its one of my many hobbies. Sometimes, I just grab my guitar play something soulful and I just drift away into thought and wonder and the words just start coming to me, like ghosts in the fog. They just appear waiting to be used.

I dont know if writing poetry or creative writing is really BadAss but I like to believe that what I write is BadAss.

Who do I read? I like Bukowski, Williams Carlos Williams, Edgar Allan Poe, Saul Williams, Walt Whitman. I take a lot from the Free Verse style like Walt Whitman but bath it in deep dark imagery sometimes like Edgar Allan Poe. Sometimes the simplest desriptions are the most powerful and yet somehow refined in a way that you get more from less. Then there are times when using the right combination of words describes the same with two or three words but the flow makes it feel natural with those extra words.

You inspired me to write something knowsbick, your enthusiasm made me pick up my pad and paper. Lets see what comes out, maybe Ill even share it with you guys, see if you like it. Buzz Buzz.

His Stillness
by Sharon Olds

The doctor said to my father, “You asked me
to tell you when nothing more could be done.
That’s what I’m telling you now.” My father
sat quite still, as he always did,
especially not moving his eyes. I had thought
he would rave if he understood he would die,
wave his arms and cry out. He sat up,
thin, and clean, in his clean gown,
like a holy man. The doctor said,
“There are things we can do which might give you time,
but we cannot cure you.” My father said,
“Thank you.” And he sat, motionless, alone,
with the dignity of a foreign leader.
I sat beside him. This was my father.
He had known he was mortal. I had feared they would have to
tie him down. I had not remembered
he had always held still and kept quiet to bear things,
the liquor a way to keep still. I had not
known him. My father had dignity. At the
end of his life his life began
to wake in me.

No comment, except that this is an extremely powerful poem... Thank you TheFly for showing me this.

I like to believe creative writing is badass... poets and writers have died for their words, have been killed and assassinated for their words, their words have inspired people to rise up and fight among many things, words have changed the world, and will again and again...
